Job Summary:

The Accounting Tech III serves as a technical expert and advanced-level resource within the Office of Student Financial Services. This position independently performs complex financial and accounting functions requiring thorough knowledge of financial aid and student account regulations, institutional policies, and accounting systems. This position provides indirect support for all functions typically performed by Accounting Technician I and II staff and regularly exercises judgment in the interpretation and application of university and funding agency regulations.

Responsibilities

Provide knowledgeable, high-level customer service via phone, email, and in person, including resolving account issues and explaining university policies.

Represent SFS at orientations and campus events; deliver presentations to students and families.

Process student fee waivers and discount programs in line with CSU guidelines, and audit for accuracy and compliance.

Issue refunds and manage Automated Clearing House (ACH) returns through PeopleSoft.

Evaluate and decide student account appeals independently, maintaining consistency through internal guidelines.

Support and reconcile federal and state loan programs (e.g., Perkins, Dream, and Nurse Faculty Loans) using third-party systems like ECSI and NSLDS.

Develop and maintain spreadsheets, analyze financial data, and troubleshoot queries.

Continuously update and improve office procedures based on policy changes.

Provide backup support to team members as needed.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

Equivalent to four years of progressively responsible financial record-keeping experience is required.

Required Qualifications

• Comprehensive knowledge of financial record-keeping, mathematical and general office methods, procedures, and practices.
• Basic knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Ability to interpret and apply a wide variety of written rules and regulations.
• Ability to maintain accounting records for funds, programs, or activities involving multiple transactions.
• Ability to compile, verify, and reconcile financial data.
• Ability to use current computer word processing and spreadsheet software programs, web browsers, query tools, integrated financial systems and/or other types of records management systems, such as student accounting, cashiering and student financial aid.
• Ability to investigate and resolve errors and discrepancies; and read and interpret computer-generated reports.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a Higher Education environment student services role.
• Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and projects, mobilize efforts toward completion, and deliver with a high degree of quality on a consistent basis.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, decision-making, and administrative skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• PeopleSoft and other enterprise system knowledge are preferred.
• Completed coursework in Business Administration, Accounting, Public Administration, or related field.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: minimum $4,900 - maximum $5,300 monthly. 

Classification Salary Range: minimum $4,166 - maximum $7,312 monthly. 

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Position Information:

Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary 

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Background Check
